Music Education students must satisfy the following Upper Division Clearance (UDC) requirements before they can take upper-level education courses. All requirements must be met at least one week prior to the start of the semester for students to be cleared for upper-level courses.
1. Coursework
Students must pass MUED 277 with a grade of B+ or better.
2. Academic Readiness
Academic readiness can be demonstrated by either GPA or “College Ready” test scores.
The minimum overall GPA requirement for UDC is 3.0. Students who do not meet this requirement may instead take the Praxis Core Skills tests, or submit SAT/ACT scores. These scores must meet the minimums in the table below.

3. Application for Waiver
Students who do not meet the minimum GPA and the Core Skills Test requirement may apply for a waiver to be admitted to Upper Division Status by petitioning the music education area with an application for an exemption that includes:
-
a personal narrative of why the student believes she/he should be given an exemption; and
-
proof of non-passing scores on the Praxis Core Skills Test(s), and
-
a letter of recommendation from a current music faculty member from outside the music education area.
Music education faculty will review these materials and the student’s progress in the program to date and determine whether the student may be granted a waiver. Waivers are not guaranteed, and only 10% of a cohort may receive a waiver. The waiver is not transferable to any other cohort. Teacher candidates who receive a waiver, but then change their graduation date or cohort may be considered.
Application for waiver is due June 1 prior to enrolling in upper division courses. Students who do not earn a B+ in MUED 277 are ineligible for a waiver.
4. Stewards of Children Online Training
Students must successfully complete the Stewards of Children program and submit the certificate of completion if they did not complete it in MUED 277 or when they switched to the Music Education major from another UD major. This program can be completed online at the Stewards of Children Online Training Program web page. The online training costs $10 and takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
