All students enrolled in Private Study must concurrently enroll in some type of approved ensemble
- Vocalists: MUSC108, 109, 110, 111
- Instrumentalists: MUSC113, 114, 115, 117, 241
Ensemble substitution approvals are determined on a case-by-case basis; contact the Music Department for details.
No student shall be allowed more than eight (Fall/Spring) semesters of undergraduate private study in his or her major performing medium without the Chair’s permission.
No student shall register for private study through the Division of Continuing Education without the written permission of the Chair.
Students are expected to practice three hours per week, per credit hour. However, each student is advised that his or her own pace of learning may require more or less time.
Ensemble Participation
Any student enrolled in private study lessons must participate in one ensemble for credit, including music majors, music minors and Merit lessons. Any student not participating in an ensemble shall be dropped from private study. This action (removal from studio instruction by the Chair) shall occur as soon as it is determined the ensemble requirement is not being satisfied. Exclusions to this policy shall be freshmen actively involved in the Honors curriculum and Music Education majors registered for EDUC 400 (student teaching). (Music majors and minors not accepted into any ensemble may request to have this requirement waived for individual reasons for one semester.)
Music scholarship students may be required to enroll in more than one ensemble in any given semester. Students may enroll in a second ensemble for “0” credit after the “1” credit requirement has been met unless another ensemble is required for a minor (e.g. a jazz ensemble for the Jazz minor).
The ensemble to which the student shall be assigned and the faculty member making the specific assignment will depend on the degree or private study program as indicated below.
